“Blind to Windward”

EscortVertical

Blind to Windward” is a new photographic project that merges my love for sailing with the opportunity to promote the achievements of persons who are blind.

SailBlind is an innovative program that provides blind and visually impaired persons with an opportunity to learn the art and science of sailing.  Blind adults and children can learn to sail through the adaptive methods developed by the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, Massachusetts (http://www.carroll.org/recreation/sailblind) and through the abilities of sighted sailors who volunteer as sailing guides.  Sailing sessions are conducted weekly for both recreation and racing sailors out of the facilities of the Courageous Sailing Center, Charlestown, sailing in Boston Harbor.  The Carroll Center Team took the Bonze Medal at the Blind Sailing World Championships last year in New Zealand.

A manuscript is in preparation for submission to numerous periodicals.   I will be seeking gallery representation for the work.  Check back here for details.  For the complete series of images see my website, www.danielpowersphoto.com, portfolio “People and Faces”.

I am grateful to Arthur O’Neill, Vice-President and Director and founder of BlindSail, for his endorsement and active support of the project.
