I am proud to announce that two of my photographs have won Merit Awards from Black and White Magazine and have been published in B&W SPECIAL ISSUE: 2010 SINGLE IMAGE CONTEST AWARDS (February, 2010). The photographs are Pythagorus (page 105) and Elements (page 146). Pythagorus can be seen at http://bandwmag.com/spotlight2/sl2.html. This issue is available now at the newstands.

The photographs were selected from a pool of 4397 entries, from which 207 images were selected (http://bandwmag.com/index.html).

I was impressed with the collective style of the body of work chosen for merit, a style that I would interpret as elemental, emotive, and elegant. It makes me love black and white all the more. I am deeply honored to be considered among the ranks of this caliber of artist.

World Photography Gala Award Winner!

The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards bestows Honorable Mention to my photograph, Elements, in the 2009 Annual Contest. To see the image among the other winners, click http://www.wonderpick.com/#/gallery/7/10.

3180 images from 47 countries were submitted, from which 187 winners were selected. Their works are profoundly breathtaking, and it is a true honor and pleasure to be considered among them. I invite you to peruse the gallery on the link above.

The images will be published in the BOOK, “WPGA 2009 Annual”, in March 2010. I will be participating in the EXHIBITION in Madrid, Spain, in March or April of 2010 (to be announced).

“Blind to Windward”

“Blind to Windward” is a new photographic project that merges my love for sailing with the opportunity to promote the achievements of persons who are blind.

SailBlind is an innovative program that provides blind and visually impaired persons with an opportunity to learn the art and science of sailing. Blind adults and children can learn to sail through the adaptive methods developed by the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, Massachusetts (http://www.carroll.org/recreation/sailblind) and through the abilities of sighted sailors who volunteer as sailing guides. Sailing sessions are conducted weekly for both recreation and racing sailors out of the facilities of the Courageous Sailing Center, Charlestown, sailing in Boston Harbor. The Carroll Center Team took the Bonze Medal at the Blind Sailing World Championships last year in New Zealand.

BLIND Sailors

I will be on the water in Boston Harbor photographing blind sailors from the Carroll Center for the Blind (http://www.carroll.org/recreation/sailblind). Experienced sailors compete in a racing program in J/22 sailboats out of the facilities of the Courageous Sailing Center in Charlestown. Photos to follow!

Special KIDS, Special PETS

So this is my latest endeavor, emergence onto the “Socially Aware Photography” scene. I have started a project called, “Special KIDS, Special PETS”, that explores the…ummm…well, special relationship between children and animals with special needs. For starters, I have developed a collaboration with WINDRUSH FARM THERAPEUTIC EQUITATION, INC (http://www.windrushfarm.org/) ”… a non-profit, working horse farm that has been successfully helping children and adults with physical, emotional, and learning disabilities since 1964.” You can see some intial photos on my website at http://www.danielpowersphoto.com.
